Blue swings. Wide lawn. A plain, solid building with buses parked in back. Concord looks like a school, a just-down-the-street school that sees generations of families pass through its doors. Though lots of schooling happens here and it has indeed served generations, Concord isn’t a school. Concord is precisely what its name says. It is the center for a neighborhood.
Kids are a priority at Concord. Here, working
parents find affordable, all-day care for
toddlers and school-age children. On any givenday, you could find yourself engulfedin the sea of color and sound that is children painting a tabletopmural.
They’ll be eager to tell you all about it; they’ll probably hand
you a brush. You might see children dancing and laughing
and falling to jazz.
If you visit Concord before or after the school day, you’ll be thronged by kids piling onto or off of our unmistakable
purple bus. Then comes the rhythmic thump of basketballs, and from a quiet corner, the raspy scratch of a pencil finding the best answer. Concord’s school age program highlights
team games — basketball and dodgeball are favorites, plus the arts, field trips, and lots of one-on-one attention, including tutoring.
Anchoring families of Indianapolis’ Southside for more than a century, Concord Neighborhood Center bears more than a physical resemblance to a school. Like a school, Concord is a safe place, a place to hear and to be heard, a place to learn and to find out, and a place to count on. The curriculum at Concord is life, and how best to travel it.
